Biden Silent on Reid Stepping Down

“That's a big problem.”
— Howard Dean
Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) failed today to address rumors that Nevada Senator Harry Reid will step down next month as Senate Minority Leader. Reid has been stung by revelations that his political action committee (PAC) accepted more than $60,000 in contributions from Indian tribes linked to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Appearing on CNN's Late Edition, Biden avoided discussing either the Reid situation or any upcoming changes in Senate Democratic leadership.
More below...
Reid is no stranger to scandal, having been the subject of a 1979 Justice Department probe into allegations that Reid — then Nevada Gaming Commission chairman — had received bribes through mob lawyer Oscar Goodman and Tropicana attorney Jay H. Brown. The probe officially cleared Reid, but he subsequently received numerous contributions from gambling industry figures, including Brown.
Some Democrats are worried that Reid's continued presence in the Senate leadership undermines Democratic hopes of scoring significant gains this November.
Earlier this month, Reid described Oscar Goodman — now Mayor of Las Vegas — as "a real vote-getter" who would be "a very, very strong candidate" if he entered the race for the Senate seat held by Republican John Ensign. "I'm happy to give him any advice or counsel that he needs or wants," Reid told the Las Vegas Sun. "I've known him for many, many years and will have to wait and see what he decides to do." Before becoming mayor in 1999, Goodman was a defense attorney whose mob clients included Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro.
"Reid is going around the country talking about a 'Republican scandal' — about Republicans accepting one- and two-thousand dollar contributions from Jack Abramoff, when his own PAC took in $60,000," said one Republican strategist. "If this is what the Democrats call a 'Culture of Corruption,' it ought to be an interesting discussion."
Some Democrats are also upset that Reid capitulated on President Bush's nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. "Everyone knows there are not enough votes to support a filibuster," Reid told reporters, even as Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and others worked to drum up support for such an effort. Reid later stated he would support a filibuster, but only as a sort of protest vote. "I think it is an opportunity for people to express their opinion as to what a bad choice (Alito) was," Reid said.
Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, appearing on Fox News Sunday, made no announcements concerning Reid's status, but did comment on the growing controversy.
Moderator Chris Wallace asked Dean, "if we find that there were some Democrats who wrote letters on behalf of some of the Indian tribes that Abramoff represented, then what do you say, sir?"
Without mentioning Reid by name, Dean replied, "That's a big problem. And those Democrats are in trouble. And they should be in trouble."

I know when Harry Reid became minority leader, all the media reports were that he was "pro-life" and "moderate". While that may have been true before, since he has become minority leader I have seen no evidence that he is anything more than a partisan hack. He's blocked President Bush at every turn, from the Patriot Act to judges. I can't think of anything that he's done since he became minority leader that would make him a moderate.
If Reid were to step down, the Republican Governor would replace him with an R. And as Minority Leader he has galloped to the left. Witness his support for the unprecedented partisan filibuster of a majority supported nominee.
Reid has long since sold out to the Kossacks. The dem leader doesn't matter.
What matters is a filibuster-proof senate majority.
Unless I read the story wrong, Reid is rumoured to be stepping down as minority leader, not leaving his senate seat. If I'm wrong and he's also considering vacating his senate seat, well, party on!
Probably one of the Congressmen. But I see no way Reid is stepping down from his Senate seat. In fact, I think it is unlikely he is stepping down as Minority Leader.
...it probably is.
I take this with a grain of salt.
Nick, I think you'd better make your point explicit. After all, it's a shame when an illustration of a tactic is taken literally... right?
I want to know which Democrats have been getting contributions from Indians linked to the Communist Party USA!

It does make a good point that MSM articles like this are also taken very seriously. No facts are incorrect. The way the article is framed changes how it is received.
Actually, we shouldn't be surprised in the least at the "news". This man has a long and storied history of grubbing for money at every opportunity. Not only Sen. Reid, but his entire family - including in-laws - have made $millions as lobbyists, especially in NV.
A recent article in Free Republic sheds more light on the subject. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1555964/posts (Note: The information for the Free Republic's article was originally furnished by the LA Times, hardly the most conservative media outlet)
If Reid steps down, Dick Durbin or Charles Schumer would probably be the new minority leader.
This would absolutely sink the Democratic party as the party would move more to the left and alienate moderate voters such as myself.
Yes, a Durbin or a Schumer would fire up the left fringe groups, but this will not correalate into more Democratic senate seats. The reason is that the Republican base is much larger than the Democratic base in most of the country.
It is no coincidence that the only Democratic president (clinton) the past 25 years was a proclaimed centrist who covered a large range of the political spectrum.
The Centrist wing of the Democratic party, whether its Bayh, Carper, Lieberman, Conrad, etc., needs to vocal and serious about winning the independant and/or moderate voters. Just appeasing the base is not a viable winning strategy.
Reid is not vacating his seat. He only vacates if he gets hauled off to the hoosegow.
But I think him stepping down really shows who the Dems are. Reid runs around saying he's pro-life????? Gimme a break. Schumer and Durbin would be a dream come true if they were the leaders, esp that 40 watt bulb Durbin.
If Reid were a Repub we all know all we would ever hear is the $60,000 "bribe."
In what alternative reality is this true? A pro-lifer who supports filibusters on pro-life appelate judges? I know the liberal media called him a moderate-conservativce when he ascended, but that was similar to saying Andropov was an improvement because he listened to Western music.
Reid's ADA rating in 2004 was 90. I can tolerate some timid Republicans saying Chafee should be supported because an alternative would be worse...but to make an argument like that about Harry Reid is truly imbecilic.
This I gotta hear. And, did you say he's pro-life? Really? How so?
From minority leader, I mean . . . and Paz, with either Dick Durbin or Chuck Schumer taking over as Minority Leader will tilt the Senate Dems to the left, and change the calculus of the '06 elections.
I can't wait to see that!
To be fair, he was one of very few Democrats to vote "No" on the Harkin Resolution endorsing Roe v. Wade.
...can get you to hold your breath waiting for that to happen?
Welcome to the GOP my friend. I've only been hear a couple of years myself. Don't worry, you'll get more comfortable with it over time.
Two years from now, you'll wonder what you were ever thinking.
Did Reid write the letter?
I have a couple more.
Did the contributions from Abramoff's clients increase to Reid after he became minority leader, or they became Abramoff's clients?
As it stands right now, the senate and congressional leaders aren't all that happy with Dean's performance as dem leader, so i'm not sure that his words in this regard mean all that much.
There will be no filibuster...stalling tactics to save face, but no filibuster. And Reid will vote for Alito. Not because he is pro-life (that would be a silly reason), but because he is qualified for the job.
And I disagree that Reid has sold out to the "Kossacks" as stated. Has he yet made statements that show he has changed his views regarding his core beliefs?
I think Reid has worked like any minority leader would, from either party.
But if the dems want to implode by replacing him with Durbin...more power to them.
The Senate Majority leader stepping down so that Dems can press an issue that will have little resonance in the November elections.
Sounds too good to be true. I'm guessing it is.
Yes he did write a letter to Gail Norton on behalf of an Indian tribe (one of Abramoff's client's). Then magicaly the NEXT DAY his PAC recieved $5,000.00. This was reported in the Washington Post on Nov. 2nd (I think) 2005. This was referenced on Fox News Sunday by Chris Wallace. He didn't happen to have that bit of information at his finger tips while Howard Dean was on the air.
Too bad for Dean(Howard the Duck) and (Dingy) Harry Reid.
A quick question about some of these points - what are Harry Reid's "core beliefs"? Can you name even one?
I'm completely serious, even though it's a fairly common question you hear around here.
I don't know the answer, although the little I've heard about him is that he's a local lawyer from way back, and has several sons following in his footsteps.
Is that true, and if so, what are the footsteps, who are his clients, what was his practice?
Thanks for any info.
Cahnman, Thanks for inviting me into the GOP, but I don't think I'm ready for this yet. However, I'm pretty close to joining. Even though I disapprove of the way the Democrats are handling the judicial processes, I'm still willing to stand for the environment and some other issues that the Democratic party stands up for. However, I just wish the Democrats would just lose the naral ladies, the gay pride groups, the feminazis, and all of the other left social groups.
Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?
After all, it's a shame when an illustration of a tactic is taken literally...right?
Judging from the response to Nick's post, I think the desired result was achieved, and this illustration was a complete success.
Just my honest opinion...
FWIW, neither party will fit you perfectly (nor me). Each will have something to offer. Just take whatever fits best. I was a lot more independent before the 2004 election season. And it was the Dkos types and the level of hatred coming from the left that pushed me in the other direction. I don't agree with Rs on everything. But I generally agree with them and I prefer them to be in power until the Ds learn that there is another half of the country who are not ignorant, racist, rednecks.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
If you think that's gonna happen, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.
voted against Roberts. He has announced he will vote against Alito. And he has said he will vote for an unprecedented partisan filibuster of a majority supported nominee.
If Reid were to step down as Minority Leader, Democrats would be smart to go with Christopher Dodd of Connecticut for Minority Leader.
Dodd??? Surely you jest.
Chuck Schumer all the way.
Chuckie Smuckie? Well then, why not the Cape Cod Orca? Or Jack Murta, now there is a leader.
Well, I am from NY too, but I don't like Schumer or Clinton. Not just because they are Democrats, so we'll just have to agree to disagree. At least we both argree on Iran!
if you all would take a step back and look at the gigantic gains (<--- sarcasm) Indians have made in the last six years (or ten or twenty years), you might think twice about condemning the recipients of these donations. Indians would be better off keeping every last dollar and spending it at home. no party is trying to help 'em out.
The article contains numerous statements of fact concerning Senator Harry Reid, his associates, and what certain people said on the Sunday 'shout shows' this morning. If stating facts and quoting people accurately strikes you as some sort of "tactic," I don't know what I can do about that.
And the Republican "culture of corruption". I thought Dean said that this was a "Republican scandal"?? I guess not.
While this seems somewhat counter-intuitive, When I lived in Alabama I was barely right of center, mostly just what was bred into me as an Army brat. In the three years I've lived near the bay area in CA, I've moved further and further to the right. It's amazing how a person can be so quickly polarized by suddenly coming face to face with sheer lunacy every day.
At the present time, this must be regarded only as a rumor. While the Senator's "pro-life" stance comes as a surprise to me concerning his recent rhetoric, I wouldn't start speculating as to whom becomes his replacement as Minority Leader until we actually see him step down. Then again, knowing the penchant for "moderate" Democrats to tow the pary line better than similarly oriented Republicans could, the Senate Dems could just as easily be fielding another moderate to replace him just to make it look like they're accepting the Republicans' majority role, sort of like how some Leftists (including the ex-President husband of a certain NY Senator) tend to look "moderate" long enough to gain their seats, then go all-out Left when they know that their constituents won't be paying attention. Conversely, they could well place a wild-eyed moonbat on the Minority Leadership chair just as easily, given the dominance of radical Leftists on the Democatic party at the present time.
...a vote on a resolution that carries no force of law is meaningless. "By their ACTIONS ye shall know them."
Or support any legislation regarding any of Abramoffs clients?
I believe so. Yesterday, Chris Wallace read part of an article (I think from the WaPo) that said that the day before or the day after a $5,000 contribution, Reid wrote a letter to some bureaucracy regarding a casino application that the contributor opposed/supported. I'd look up the cite, but my lousy Explorer refuses to explore. (Curse Bill Gates!!)
laughing. Bwahahahahahahahaha.
Here. If there is more to this issue and I am missing something, please let me know.
The word "if" comes to mind. Dean didn't say anything more than that.

Or support any legislation regarding any of Abramoffs clients?
Remember, Reid is a pro-life, relatively conservative dem.
If he was to step down, or be removed, his replacement is sure to be more liberal, and therefore less accepting of the president's agenda.
